Back in 2013, Disney’s dark horse entry into early-eighties sci-fi, The Black Hole, was slated for a remake. It was to be written by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) and directed by Joe Kosinski (Oblivion) (Click here for the original article.)
As time went on and updates on the project became scarce, it was assumed that the project was canceled. But now it seems it has been on Disney’s radar all this time. In spite of the lackluster performance of Tron: Legacy in 2010, where a remake of The Black Hole was teased with subtly placed props in the background, it seems that Sean Bailey, President of Motion Picture Production at Disney, has not given up on the idea of bringing the crews of The U.S.S. Palamino and The U.S.S. Cygnus to a modern audience.
“I believe the time has come to give this project a clean slate. We want a fresh approach with an emphasis on the actual science of black holes, which the original movie took great theatrical license with, to say the least. We want heroes that will both inspire and thrill you, and villains that will genuinely frighten you. We have a plan, and I know you’re going to love it.” –Sean Bailey, President of Motion Picture Production, Disney.
When asked who might star in this remake, Bailey only mentioned that they were in talks with actors for two of the principal roles.
“We currently have a tentative arrangement with Christoph Waltz to possibly play Dr. Hans Reinhardt and we’d love to get Karl Urban to play Dr. Alex Durant, but we don’t have anything binding in place just yet.”
You might remember Christoph Waltz as the terrifying Col. Hans Landa in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds. Karl Urban was most recently seen in Thor: Ragnarok as the morally flexible Scourge and has also played Dr. Leonard McCoy in the newer Star Trek movies.
We will continue to provide updates on this project as we learn more. We’re very excited to hear that The Black Hole will get another chance to capture hearts of audiences. Bailey did not give any indication of when the movie would release or who would write or direct the new project. In fact, he didn’t say or do anything we posted above. April Fools 2018. (Sorry.
